International Disability Benefits – Overview
Disability benefits and safety nets outside the U.S. are extremely diverse. Some countries have:
- National disability pensions and strong social insurance
- Universal health systems
- Integrated housing and care supports
Others have very limited or fragile systems, especially in regions affected by conflict, austerity, or colonial legacies.
This page is a global map and invitation for people around the world to share reliable information about their own countries.
What “Benefits” Can Look Like Internationally
Depending on the country, disability-related support might include:
- Disability pensions or income support
- Universal or national health coverage
- Means-tested social assistance
- Housing subsidies or social housing
- Personal assistance and home-care services
- Community-based rehabilitation and support
- NGO-run programs where state systems are weak

How to Add Your Country or Region
If you live outside the U.S., you can help by:
- Finding the right regional page (Europe, Latin America, Africa, etc.), or using /benefits/other-countries-benefits as a starting point.
- Adding a heading for your country or region.
- Describing, in clear terms:
- Main disability income supports
- Health coverage for disabled people
- Key housing, transport, or caregiving supports
- Major barriers or exclusions
- Linking to official government sources, disabled people’s organizations, or trusted community guides where possible.
Centering Lived Experience and Safety
In some places:
- Benefits are tied to institutionalization or guardianship.
- Disabled people face surveillance or punishment for receiving aid.
- Public information is limited, censored, or not available in accessible formats.
If you are contributing from such a context:
- Be cautious about sharing identifying information.
- Focus on general descriptions and public information.
- If needed, use anonymous or pseudonymous contributions.
